Yesterday was National Bi-Visibility Day and after years of struggling to come out to the world, I shared this post:
I had no idea how much pain I was trying so hard (and failing) not to feel. So instead of actually feeling my feelings, I tried to drink them away, read them away, travel them away, sex them away (Cranes in the Sky by Solange also became my anthem during this season). I shouldn’t have been surprised, but nothing seemed to work.
Until one day I decided to come out to my twin sister. And then a few months later I went to my first-ever Black Pride event. It was like coming home to myself for the very first time. I was in community with other LGBTQ Black women and I had never felt so free. On our way to a party we turned down an alley and as if was a sign from the universe, we saw a beautiful rainbow mural. The picture we took that night has become one of my absolute favorites and a symbol of what it FEELS like when I’m living in my light.
Some people might be reading this message wondering why I’m sharing it and what it has to do with business. Coming out to myself, to you, and the rest of the world has EVERYTHING to do with business. When you are truly living in your light you give other people permission to do the same.
Living in your light means no longer shrinking yourself because of what other people think. It means showing up as your WHOLE self and allowing people to see you for who you really are, not who you want them to think you are. And lastly, as someone who passes as straight, I recognize the privilege that I have and how Black trans women across the country are being murdered because they simply want to live in their light.
Whatever living in your light means to you, you owe it to the world to give yourself permission to shine.
