This week’s featured guest is Erin Jones, a candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruction from Seattle, WA. If elected, Erin would make history as the first African-American elected statewide. Raised in the Netherlands, Erin is an award winning educator who speaks 4 languages. In this week’s episode of Changing the Face of Power, Erin shares her powerful story of using her privilege to transform the lives of others through education.
Meet Erin:
Erin Jones has been involved in education for the past 24 years. She has taught in a variety of environments, from predominantly African American to predominantly Caucasian to some of the most diverse communities in the nation. Erin received an award as the Most Innovative Foreign Language Teacher in 2007, while working at Stewart Middle School in Tacoma and was the Washington State Milken Educator of the Year in 2008 while teaching at Rogers High School in Spokane.
She received recognition at the White House in March of 2013 as a “Champion of Change.” Erin just resigned from her job as the Director of the AVID program in Tacoma to run as a candidate for State Superintendent and is the first Black woman to run for any state office in Washington state. She has two children in college, one joining the army, and a husband, James, who is a teacher in North Thurston School District.
